TERRA STUDIO was founded in 2001 to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to place-based design. Our work includes residential and commercial architecture, interior design and campus planning along the Mid-Atlantic region. We design houses, apartments, offices, rooms, furniture, yards, streetscapes and assembly spaces.
Our projects evolve through processes of collaboration, which can be detailed exchanges with individual clients or with groups of stakeholders. These exchanges allow for a deeper understanding of the present and future lives for which we design. We find inspiration in patterns of social interaction and neighborhood context and believe that quality design is based on an understanding for human experience.
Our investigations focus on the specifics of the surroundings with the goal of responsibly and gracefully relating contemporary life with the natural environment. We build upon the connections between the indoors and the outdoors and between buildings and location. Place-based design has the potential to enrich our lives by connecting individuals with the world around.
Our designs incorporate the changes inherent to human experience and support interaction and movement. We seek an order that is fluid, rather than static, and patterns that repeat and change. We create environments that respond to the social and natural transformations that occur over time and places that are both familiar and different.
Our objective is to integrate the constructed and natural worlds with human activities in a manner that supports meaningful and sustaining existence. Outstanding design finds a resonance between habitation and the surroundings and can ennoble our lives with the quiet poetry that speaks of being present in time and place.
